Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay sits halfway down Namibia’s Atlantic coast, in a natural bay that shelters the harbour.1 It is run by the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport), a statutory body set up in 1994.2

What documents does an import into Namibia need?

The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) lists the standard set: commercial invoice, bill of lading or air waybill, packing list, certificate of origin, and any permit or licence the goods need. The customs entry is a SAD 500 bill of entry, lodged electronically.4

What duty applies to goods landed in Namibia?

Namibia is in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) with Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and South Africa. Goods from outside the union pay its common external tariff, the same rates as at a South African port.5 Once cleared, they move between the five members without further customs duty. NamRA has an online tariff tool.6

Is there a direct sea service from Europe?

In a January 2025 customer advisory, MSC listed its Namibia Express service linking Walvis Bay with London Gateway, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Le Havre, Sines and Las Palmas. Rotations change, so check the current schedule with your forwarder.7
